Information
This 18th century home is the only surviving example of its kind in Jonestown, and was home to Baltimore’s second mayor, Thorowgood Smith. After serving as Smith’s home from 1802-1804, the building functioned as a hotel, restaurant, apartment house, and a secondhand auto parts shop. The Women’s Civic League sponsored the restoration of the home in 1972, and continues to maintain the building.
The Women’s Civic League is the oldest continuous civic improvement organization in the United States! The organization was formed in 1911 to promote safe and healthy living conditions in Baltimore, and to beautify the city. The Women’s Civic League has sponsored the planting of thousands of trees throughout Baltimore and hosted Flower Mart from 1911 to 1999.
