About:

A hidden gem in Fell’s Point, the Ship Caulkers’ Houses lay at the intersection of freedom and advancement for Black people in Baltimore during the pre-Civil War era. In the 1840s and 1850s, these houses were home to free Black ship caulkers. Anchored in community and sovereignty, free and enslaved Black ship caulkers worked to create a place for themselves in Baltimore’s bustling port economy.

Saved from the edge of collapse, these houses were recently stabilized and their exteriors painstakingly restored to their 1840-1850s appearance. Interior restoration will begin in the near future.

The unfinished state of these small homes offers a fascinating look into the construction and evolution of the houses over time!
