About

In 1881, a group of prominent Methodists decided to found a women’s college on a parcel of land gifted by pastor John Goucher and his wife Mary. By 1888, the Romanesque building designed by prominent architect Stanford White was finished. Notable alumnae of the college include Jessie Sayre, early suffragist and daughter of US President Woodrow Wilson, and Emily Newell Blair, founder of the League of Women Voters.

Over the decades, Old Goucher Hall has been a college, a Red Cross, a language center, and administrative offices. In 2000, Sally L. Smith founded Baltimore Lab School, and the school has been housed in the building since 2004.
