The Harlem Theatre
614-616 N Gilmor St, Baltimore, MD 21217
Information
Constructed in 1932, the Harlem Park Theatre was initially conceived as a cinema with a seating capacity of 1,500, and it has since become a prominent fixture of the neighborhood. The history of the site extends back to 1902, when a Romanesque-style church was built for the expanding Methodist Episcopal congregation, who abandoned the building after two destructive fires and rapid urban transformations. The church was subsequently replaced by a new movie theater designed by renowned Baltimore architect Theodore Wells Pietsch. In 1975, the theater ceased operations and was transformed into the Harlem Park Community Baptist Church, which served the congregation until 2019. The Harlem Park community subsequently acquired the building with the intent of repurposing it into a cultural arts center and event space.
