The Star Spangled Banner Flag House

844 E Pratt St, Baltimore, MD 21202 www.flaghouse.org

Built in 1793, the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House was the home and workshop of Mary Pickersgill, a successful flag maker. In 1813, Mary Pickersgill and her team made the 30 foot by 42 foot Star-Spangled Banner, which flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write his famous poem, “The Defence of Fort McHenry,” later to become our national anthem. In 1927, the home was purchased by the City of Baltimore and the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House Association to become a museum. A National Landmark since 1970, the museum showcases many early 19th century objects that belonged to the Young-Pickersgill family. Come to the Hofmeister Building to take a tour and see the current exhibition, “Family of Flagmakers: The Women Who Created the Star-Spangled Banner!”
