Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church

10 E Mount Vernon Pl, Baltimore, MD 21202 www.mvp-umc.org

Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church is a prime example of Norman Gothic architecture. The magnificent asymmetrical facade is composed of green serpentine Baltimore County marble with red and buff sandstone trim. As these materials were difficult to carve, the decorations were fairly roughhewn, featuring native flora and fauna motifs. The site originally housed the mansion of Charles Howard, who was married to Elizabeth Phoebe Key. Their home was where her father, Francis Scott Key, the author of The Star Spangled Banner, passed away. A plaque observing his death adorns the southern outside church wall, marking the church as a highlighted location on the National Historic Register. The cost of this grand structure, including land, building, and furnishings was $400,000 in 1872, which in today’s dollars would be about $7,000,000. Take a self-guided tour of the chapel and main sanctuary.
