McKim Free School

1232 E Baltimore St, Baltimore, MD 21202 www.mckimcenter.org

The building designed by William Howard and William Small and construction was funded by John McKim, a Quaker merchant. Designed after the Theseum and the north wing of the Propylaea on the Acropolis, the McKim building has been called “the most perfect example of Doric architecture in the U.S.”  Opened in 1833, the building served as the first free school in Baltimore City serving the children of Jewish, Polish and Italian immigrants without tuition. Today, the building is home to the McKim Community Association, which offers programs for youth, adults and senior citizens of the Jonestown area.
