Institute of Notre Dame

901 Aisquith St, Baltimore, MD 21202 www.Indofmd.org

Sister Theresa, founder of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, came to Baltimore from Germany in 1847 to educate low income girls and women in East Baltimore.  The order purchased the original convent from Redemptorist priests in 1847 and construction of the school, the Institute of Notre Dame (IND), was completed in 1852.  In continuous operation for nearly 170 years, it is the oldest American girls’ school still located at its original site and the first of many schools established in the US by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Prominent alumnae of IND include Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Senator Barbara Mikulski.  Join a guided tour of the school and enjoy special exhibits about the history of IND.
