Historic St. James’ Episcopal Church

1020 W Lafayette Ave, Baltimore, MD 21217 www.stjamesonthesquare.org

St. James’ Episcopal Church is a historic African American church that was first organized by Reverend William Levington who held the first service on an upper room at Park Avenue and Marion Street in 1824. It is the third oldest African-American Episcopal congregation in the U.S. and the oldest south of the Mason-Dixon line. The church migrated several times before finding its current home on Lafayette Avenue. The church’s rose windows in the sanctuary were destroyed by a lightning strike in 1993 and in 1995 Bishop Charles Longest re-consecrated the building. Come learn more about the church on a guided tour!
