About

Isabella McLanahan Brown provided $150,000 to construct an impressive memorial to her late husband, George Brown. Isabella was possibly the first woman to fully fund a house of worship in America. The church’s exterior asymmetrical front façade with rusticated marble and limestone accents, along with use of the pointed arch and stone buttresses, reflect the popular mid-nineteenth century, late Victorian, Gothic-revival style. The sanctuary is best known for its eleven Tiffany stained-glass windows, two of which are reputed to be the largest in the firm’s history. In 1931, a nearly 3,000-pipe Skinner organ was installed.
