Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

409 Cathedral St, Baltimore, MD 21201 www.americasfirstcathedral.org

Limited Hours: 10am—2pm.

The first Roman Catholic cathedral constructed in the United States, the Baltimore Basilica was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect of the United States Capitol building. Designed in a monumental, neoclassical-style, the Basilica features a traditional European cathedral design with a Latin cross plan and central dome. The recent restoration project reinstated the building’s original interior color scheme, light marble flooring, and 24 clear glass skylights. In order to become open to the public after years of closure, tons of sand were cleared from the crypt and expansive masonry undercroft. Public guided tours will be available at 9am, 11am and 1pm with additional tours available by request.
